Join us for an evening with Marianne Chan, @mariannelchan who will read from her new poetry collection, Leaving Biddle City. A conversation with Sylvia Chong will follow. This in-person event will be free and open to the public. We recommend arriving early for the best seating.

About the Book: A coming-of-age narrative, Leaving Biddle City details one Filipina American speaker’s experience of growing up amid a white, Midwestern suburbia mythologized as “Biddle City.” Through prose poems, pantoums, ballads, flattened haikus, and thematic autobiographies, Chan maps a territory of intergenerational conflict, racial alienation, and memory and forgetfulness. What’s achieved is a work of play and meticulous beauty, a collection that reframes how we may understand ourselves, our histories, and the places where we are from.

About the Author: Marianne Chan grew up in Stuttgart, Germany, and Lansing, Michigan. She is the author of All Heathens (Sarabande Books, 2020), which was the winner of the 2021 GLCA New Writers Award. Her second collection, Leaving Biddle City, will be published in 2024. Her poems have appeared in Poetry, Best American Poetry, New England Review, Kenyon Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. She teaches at Old Dominion University.

About the Moderator: Sylvia Chong is an associate professor in English and American Studies at the University of Virginia, and the director of the minor in Asian Pacific American Studies. She is the author of The Oriental Obscene: Violence and Racial Fantasies in the Vietnam Era (Duke UP, 2012) and the coeditor of (Re)Collecting the Vietnam War (AALR, 2015), and has written articles on Charlie Chan, American exceptionalism, hopelessness, orientalism, the Virginia Tech shootings, and Samuel Peckinpah. She is currently working on a history of cinematic yellowface and racial performance.

As we continue with AAPI Heritage Month, we wanted to highlight Anïca, a local Asian American artist who is also the Space Coordinator for the Bridge AND one of the planners for this week’s karaoke night!

Our next event for this month is a VeryAsian VA Karaoke Night this Saturday, 5/18 from 6-7:30 pm at the Bridge (306 East Main St - across from the parking lot).

Meet Anïca! Anïca is a multidisciplinary Filipina artist with a passion for blending diverse mediums and drawing her creativity from her constantly changing surroundings, cultural influences, and personal experiences.

While most known for her custom-painted apparel for HBCU students all over the country, Anica has also exhibited artwork in cities ranging from Jackson, MS to Washington D.C., showcasing her vision and uncommon, yet original approaches in art and life as a thriving young creative.

Whether it’s through a photoshoot, an outfit, a canvas, a song, or even a tall brick wall, her main goal is to tell each piece’s untold stories and bring it to life in the most authentic way.

The VeryAsian VA festival is about building commun

The VeryAsian VA festival is about building community, and that includes everyone who drops by to see what’s going on and find their own place in the festivities. Pun said the audience has an important part to play in the festival’s success, and that of the community.

“How do we connect with each other? It’s all about celebrating each other’s differences and similarities,” Pun told @cvilledailyprogress . “We’re in tumultuous times, and the more we can get together and support each other, the better. Things just take time… It sets the way for the next thing and inspires it. Let’s celebrate the fact that you’re here, too,” Pun said.

Our VeryAsian VA First Fridays at @thebridgepai is tomorrow from 5-9 pm!!!!! We will be featuring Asian American artists, wine enthusiasts and vendors at this celebration!

The next artist feature is HA Tran! HA Tran (they/she) is a Vietnamese-American dabbler in creative hobbies of all kinds. Seeking to create works that foster feelings of positivity, comfort, and joy of living as one’s own authentic self, HA’s favorite subject is food illustration. Outside of visual arts, HA can be found working on quilts, making music, or existing outside.

Directions to the Bridge: The entrance to the Bridge is located on the Downtown Mall, off the intersection of 3rd St SE & E Water St. It is across from the Water Street Parking Garage and next to the drive through of The Virginia National Bank - the entrance is located at the back of the building that contains the Vault & The Bradbury! There will be signage put up outside of the entrance indicating the First Friday event!

Our next artist feature is Erika Chu!

Erika Chu (she/her) is a Chinese American artist and creative based out of Charlottesville, VA. Erika is an
avid fan of dragons, fantastical creatures, and origami, and these themes often find their way into her
art. Her work has been exhibited in several group shows, most notably at Second Street Gallery.

For the art show, Erika will be selling hand-bound blank sketchbooks/journals. She will also be sharing an
etched print she made as a dialogue between her and her mother, who was born in the lunar year of the
dragon (this year, 2024, is also the year of the dragon!).
