UVA Professor @sylviashchong will be moderating the event as part of the @vabookfest here in @charlottesvilleva

Many residents of Cville, whether natives or trans

Many residents of Cville, whether natives or transplants, often say they feel a quick sense of home being here but it is evident that not all groups feel similarly. Many had to find their own way to make it feel like home and that in some ways is what the Wang brothers (originally from Kunming in the South of China) did when they opened Charlottesville’s Asian Market in the early 2000’s.

During the pandemic and the rise of xenophobia, the business received some discrimination but ultimately prevailed. At one point during the tumultuous time they decided to sell but wanted to make sure whomever took over would keep it running similarly for the Charlottesville community. In the last few months they found a new family from Burma / Myanmar who will be taking over this week.

Xing still operates his other business in scottsville, Beijing Kitchen and Xong will be enjoying his retirement, most likely playing his Erhu (a traditional 2-stringed violin from China).

I was born in Washington, D.C., to Korean immigrant parents who met here in the States and became nationalized citizens. Dad went to college in D.C. and earned his Ph.D from American University in Political Science. Mom went to college in Korea. Both of them came here sometime in the mid-to-late 1960s, I think. They moved out to the Northern Virginia suburbs shortly after I was born and I grew up there until I came to Charlottesville to go to UVA in the early 90s.

What does being Asian mean to me? It’s complicated, I guess, but not in a bad way. Complicated but great. Being an Asian-American from my generation carries with it a certain amount and type of baggage that results from growing up then—where your ethnic background felt like a burden to carry, an impediment to “fitting in” or whatever, and something to downplay or suppress, so I did not really start being actively interested and outwardly proud of Korean culture until somewhat recently in life. That being said, personally, I always thought Asians were cool and that being Asian was awesome, and I never felt ashamed of my background. But I’d be lying if I said I never felt discrimination, or that I never felt like being Korean-American was in some ways a liability or a challenge I would have to overcome in this country and society. What I see going on now—the embrace of Korean culture by people in the States and all over the world, really—is something I wasn’t sure I’d see in my lifetime. Very exciting.

Sri Kodakalla (she/they) @dystopian_conditionals is a multimedia creative and arts organizer based in Charlottesville, VA. Sri is a graduate of the University of Virginia in Computer Engineering. Since graduating, they have worked and volunteered in several Central Virginia arts organizations (Second Street Gallery, McGuffey Art Center, and The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative), focused on serving the creative and equitable growth of BIPOC artists and youth. Along with co-founder and fellow artist Ramona Martinez, they direct Bad Milk Press, a DIY publishing organization based in Charlottesville, and produce MALA LECHE, a radical art & writing publication featuring the work of women, non-binary, and genderqueer creatives in Central Virginia.

Their multimodal creative work combines mixed-media visual art, writing, and research-based methodology to compose non-narrative dream-like evocations of memories, often depicting facets of my immigration experience, cultural homecoming, and familial oral stories. Integrating intensive iterative craft with vignette storytelling, this work explores themes of identity reclamation, sustained griefs, recurrent memory, and our relationship to legacy. Their work has been exhibited nationally in several solo and group exhibitions, most notably at Second Street Gallery and 934 Gallery.

Meesha Goldberg is an artist and poet living in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her primary medium is oil paint, which she uses to render realistic, mystical landscapes that speak to humanity's belonging and responsibility to the earth. Her experiences journeying through monocultures, standing on frontlines, and living off the land have all served as inspiration through her evolving work. Her latest experiments in performance ritual use the long walk to journey into mythological time. Goldberg has exhibited in galleries across the country with solo shows in Portland, Los Angeles, and Seattle, and Charlottesville. Her forthcoming poetry collection “The Seed Is Waiting In The Dark” will be published in 2024 by Finishing Line Press.

Eddie Keomahathai landed in Charlottesville from northeast Thailand with his family in 1976, at age 11. He was the eldest of three kids and, since both parents worked, his mom started teaching him how to cook as soon as they arrived here so he could help feed the family. Eddie and his family were not officially refugees, but his father was working for the U.S. military on an American air base in Thailand when the Yanks decided to pull out after Vietnam war.

Eddie took to life in Virginia, learning a new language, a new way of living. He graduated from Charlottesville High School and then went off to Averett University to study art and then graduate at UVA. He opened and ran several restaurants including Thai ’99, Bangkok ’99 and others throughout Central VA. Through his establishments he became a lover of wine, craft beer and spirits. Big time Foodie! He bought his 2nd restaurant from the owners of @thaicuisinecville @chimmtaste & @chimmstreet back in 2001 which was called “Thai! Simply exquisite” On 29N. 13 years later he sold that same family Bangkok ‘99 so they could open Thai Cuisine & Noodle House on Commonwealth Ave. in 2014, basically keeping it all in the Cville Thai family!

Now let’s talk about WINE, #VAWine to be specific! We have a great panel of Asian / Asian American Wine reps who will be pouring select varietals to pair with different bites from some of our favorite Cville restaurants including @marudowntown @kanak.cville @monsoon_siam @mochikocville and @chimmtaste . One of our reps is @tiffwnguyen who we are very excited to have and we are so thankful to @oenoverse for presenting this tasting with us!

Tiffany has been in Charlottesville since 2008 and has made this area home with her husband and 4 kids over the years. She has a heart to create space for people to gather and come together wholly and authentically. As a self-proclaimed wine enthusiast, Tiffany was selected as a Wine Unify Welcome Award recipient this spring and has started her formal wine education (WSET Level 1) through the Napa Valley Wine Academy. She looks forward to sharing a glass and space with those she encounters.
